Alex ran in the 800 relay tonight and they won a solid victory with room to spare. This means that his relay team will move on from sectionals to the regional meet next week. Hopefully, they will go on to the big deal: State competition.
It has been hard on Alex to have Chris so sick, but he has done a great job of keeping up with his life, separate from the leukemia, just as Chris asked him to do.
I think that my job is to be Alex's umbrella in the sense that whatever falls, hits me first, and I take charge. Then, he knows that I am managing whatever needs to be done. If he is asked to help, it is not from a primary role, just as an occasional assistant. That is a paraphrase of what he has said helps him to feel okay.
Alex is such a star! And you both are wonderful parents. I bet that umbrella gets heavy, but your love for both of your boys gives you the strength to keep it up. Love you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Alex. and you.
ReplyDeleteFriends often ask me how Alex is doing. I wish I had a more confident answer and feel like I'm not doing a great job when I can only report that he seems okay and that he tells me that he is okay. He doesn't talk much about Chris.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to pressure him and I hope he will tell me if things are not good for him. It's a hard time where he is growing independence but we have this big thing going on. My best take is the umbrella metaphor. But I am trying to watch to see if I need to do more.
I think that you are a very wise mom in your umbrellaism. Congratulations on Alex's achievements...I hope they go all the way to State. I remember the days when our boys were participating in sports, it was so exciting to watch them. It's good that you are helping him keep a balance in his life. Balancing is hard. Thinking of you often. -Pat. Btw, Larry's doing a little better right now. Fingers are crossed.
