Late Evening Phonecalls from Oncologists are Unnerving

Chris has had something going on in his right lung the last few days, causing lots of pain, shortness of breath, and malaise.  We knew a problem was developing over the weekend, but Chris didn't want to go to the ER and had no fever, so we decided to wait until today's labs and Doc visit to see what was up.

Tests were done today and then the Doc emailed me early evening that he would like to call us at home.  This oncologist is a great guy, makes himself super available, but evening phone call requests are very, very rare.  And they are scary.

While waiting for the call, we succumbed to fear: talking about the end of it all, goodbyes, missed opportunities, love, sadness, relief from misery, and the niceties of mixing the proper oil with gas for the lawnmower versus the leaf blower.  I cried.  Chris was emotional but kind of resolved.

The call finally came and the Onco tells us that Chris has some sort of pneumonia, either bacterial or fungal, and an invasive test (bronchoscopy) will reveal what.  He said that the results could rule him out of the Penn trial or could be treated with IV medicines.

So, Chris will go into the hospital again and we will know more in a few days.  Latest plan is to do this outpatient, so Chris will be spared a hospital stay (which he loathes).
